As cigarettes are teeming with dangerous bacteria

American and French scientists discovered that a commercially available cigarettes contaminated with many bacteria, including those causing disease in humans.
Several previous studies showed the presence of cigarettes of various synthetic additives, heavy metals and other chemical pollutants, hazardous to human health, the campaign "MEDnovosti with reference to PhysOrg. However, microbiological testing of tobacco products has not yet been conducted.
Scientists from the University of Maryland and Elite High School Lyons estimated the total content of the microbial genetic material in the four common varieties of cigarettes through the analysis of bacterial ribosomal RNA cloning and diagnostic DNA sequencing.
In all samples of tobacco products was found a wide range of potentially dangerous bacteria, related to the amount to 15 classes of microorganisms. The most common species of the genera Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Burkholderia, Clostridium, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Serratia, which may cause infections of various organs. They were discovered more than 90% of the samples.
Several less determined potentially pathogenic bacteria belonging to the genera Campylobacter, Enterococcus, Proteus and Staphylococcus. Essential difference between the microbial composition of different types of cigarettes were found.
"We assumed that cigarettes contaminated with germs, but did not think that would find such a number of pathogenic bacteria", - said one of the researchers Amy Sapkota.
Scientists stressed that the influence of the received data on public health is not valued - this requires further study.
Previously, scientists have found that intestinal bacteria are necessary for the development of the immune system - immune system cells mature, "communicating" with the bacteria through the exchange of specific molecules. In the intestines of humans and animals inhabit several hundred species of microorganisms, many of which contribute to digestion - with their help, some nutrients are digested and synthesized a number of vitamins.

Health Minister: Spain is Ready for Full Smoking Ban

MADRID -(Dow Jones)- Spain is ready for total smoking ban in public places, Spain\'s health minister Trinidad Jimenez said in an interview Monday with radio station Cadena Ser.

\"Right now, with the information we have and the study we are doing of the current (smoking) law, I think the society is mature enough... and we want to prohibit smoking in all public places,\" Jimenez said.

In 2006 Spain introduced a smoking ban in workplaces and public places larger than 100 square meters. However, a smoke-free bar or restaurant, for example, in Spain is rare. Many of the country\'s bars and restaurants are smaller than 100 square meters and in larger establishments, few owners enforce the law or have installed nonsmoking sections.

The move is likely to be a blow to tobacco companies, that have traditionally found Spain, along with other Southern European nations, to be key markets.

Imperial Tobacco Group PLC (IMT.LN), maker of Fortuna, Ducados, Davidoff, West and Drum and Altria Group Inc. (MO) whose Marlboro brand is also popular in Spain, are likely to be the most affected by a probable drop in tobacco consumption in the country.

Imperial Tobacco and Altria weren\'t immediately available to comment.

Company Web site: http://www.cadenaser.com

-By Jason Sinclair, Dow Jones Newswires; 34 91 395 8127; jason.sinclair@dowjones.com

(END) Dow Jones Newswires

08-17-09 0702ET

Copyright (c) 2009 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.

Tricks To Roll Tobacco

Cigarettes and smoking, beginning with the civilizations and events that contributed to the evolution of tobacco smoking from ancient times to the modern industrial age--when tobacco began large-scale production and use worldwide. Indians began smoking rolled tobacco leaves, and were believed to be the first real cigar smokers. A cigarette is a tobacco product manufactured out of cured and finely cut tobacco leaves, which is rolled or stuffed into a paper-wrapped cylinder, generally less than 120 mm in length and 10 mm in diameter.

There are a number of reasons, as a smoker, to smoke hand rolled loose tobacco. Quality is one reason. Good hand rolling tobacco is generally vastly superior to the majority of pre-packaged cigarettes. Hand rolling allows a smoker to remove stems and other trash from your tobacco, and also allows you to choose the paper, size, and density in your cigarette. Most pre-packaged cigarettes are impregnated with thousands of chemicals, but notably, sulphur and salt peter in the paper to ensure that it burns whether you're actually actively smoking the cigarette or not. This ensures that you smoke and buy more cigarettes, and makes saving a portion of a cigarette unpalatable. Many brands of cigarettes also use sheet tobacco which is comprised of reconstituted factory floor sweepings and other trash.

The second most important thing is the rolling paper used. The papers included with better hand roll brands are usually adequete, but some people prefer to buy specialty papers. Rolling 'leaves' made of rice or hemp paper is a good start. There are more brands of rolling paper available than there are brands of tobacco, in an amazing array of sizes, colors, shapes, and materials.

There are quite a few different techniques for rolling cigarettes. Here is another one. Once again, filters are completely optional.

Instructions:

· Take some handrolling tobacco (tabac à rouler in France, where I learned all this). I recommend Amsterdamer. Other brands include Drum and Old Hornsby.

· Get a rolling paper. Place it flat on the table in front of you, with the glue side up and the strip of glue facing away from you.

· Take a chunk of tobacco that is approximately the length of your paper and half of its width.

· Roll the tobacco between your fingers for a little while as described above.

· You should now be able to fold the bottom edge of the paper up to the fold in the middle. Do this, and then flip the glue edge over the bottom edge and under the cigarette. Then, flip the edge back up behind your cigarette.

· Lick the glue and press the edge down, making sure not to leave any air pockets. If you do, that part of the paper will burn right away, giving you an unsmokable cigarette with giant holes.

· It's a good idea to either let the cigarette dry, or to dry it with your lighter.

This will leave you with a slightly flat cigarette that smokes very easily. If you do this in public, expect odd looks. Some people will think you're rolling a joint, which is much more involved.
